Stereotypes
Stereotypes are judgmental opinions that lots of people share. They might be good but usually, stereotypes are bad. Some simple examples of stereotypes are thoughts like: "Boys are better at math than girls are." "Old people are grumpy." "People who wear glasses are smart...but boring."
Stereotypes may be true for a few people in a group - but are not true for all. Sometimes, stereotypes are well known - but sometimes they are subtle and it is hard to even know you thought them. For example, if you meet someone who looks a lot like a friend you had in Kindergarten - you may automatically like them without realizing you are thinking they will be like your old friend.
Stereotypes hurt people because we start trying to predict how a person will act or what they are like based on a stereotype...and we form an opinion of them before we get to know them.
Our Barbies are good examples of stereotyping. When you found out that you were going to get a Barbie for this Journey - you were all very excited. However, when you found out that you didn't get to pick which one of the three Barbies you got, some of you were disappointed. When you actually got your doll, many of you wanted to trade your doll for a different one.
